1. Early Years (1975–1985): Flat-Fee Licensing Microsoft was founded in 1975, originally providing software like Altair BASIC. In the early 1980s, Microsoft licensed MS-DOS to IBM under a flat-fee agreement—IBM paid a one-time fee for perpetual use. Microsoft retained ownership of MS-DOS, allowing it to license the software to
